Cape Town City Tour

Steeped in history, iconic landmarks and contemporary eurocentricity, Cape Town is simply spectacular. A fusion of landscapes, culture and cuisine, this world-renowned city is a popular destination and it is easy to see why.

Ascend the iconic Table Mountain in a cable car that promises unparalleled views of the city below, where the sparkling ocean and rugged mountain backdrop truly astonishes. Visit Clifton, the affluent suburb of Cape Town boasting some of the most expensive real estate in South Africa and four sun-kissed beaches and upmarket Camp’s Bay, ideal for people watching, trendy cafes, pristine beaches and views of the Twelve Apostles.

Head to Greenmarket Square for some retail therapy at colourful stalls browsing beautifully handcrafted African curious, clothing and jewellery as enthusiastic buskers, drummers, jugglers and mime artists liven up the atmosphere. Stroll through Company Gardens, home to immaculate gardens and parks, impressive buildings, museums, places of worship and an art gallery.

Explore the haunted Castle, built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company. Once a replenishment station for ships sailing by the Cape of Good Hope, today it has many a chilling story to tell. Set your watch to watch the Signal Hill’s noon canon firing, followed by an exploration of Cape Town’s colourful Malay quarter Bo-Kaap. This vibrant neighbourhood offers a unique history and culture, and hearty Cape Malay cuisine. Your journey ends in dazzling fashion with an exclusive diamond tour.

Robben Island

Declared a World Heritage Site, the 3.5 hour eye opening tour illuminates the country’s tortured history and once prison to its most formidable political heroes, which include Nelson Mandela. The ferry ride departs from the luxurious V&A Waterfront and provides a breathtaking view of the city and Table Mountain in its backdrop. Helicopter and private tours can also be accommodated for more discerning travellers. The island is home to a wide variety of fauna and expertly guided by ex-political prisoners that give chilling experienced tours across the island and the in-house museum.

Highlights of this harrowing tour include Nelson Mandela’s cell, where South Africa’s greatest known statesman was harshly imprisoned during his incarceration. This is also the focal point of the tour for many people. Explore the limestone quarry where prisoners would toil in the raging sun for hours, breaking up rocks in this carefully patrolled area was just a mindless way to keep prisoners occupied. A vast graveyard on the island houses many prisoners who were taken by an epidemic, and further back in history to those who succumbed to leprosy. There are various places of worship including a green domed mosque and the old Garrison church.

During these harrowing times of struggle there was always the refuge of faith. A tour of Robben Island, once a maximum security prison, is a fascinating window into the torments of the past.

Table Mountain Visit

A trip up Table Mountain is an absolute must-do when in Cape Town. One of the most iconic natural sights in the world, hop in a cable car and slowly make your way up this awesome landmark. As you ascend, you’ll love the magnificent views of the crashing ocean and the dazzling city from your glass bubble. Once you reach the top, there are plenty of things to do. Enjoy an ice cream and be fascinated by the dassies, little furry animals that live amongst the rocks.

Table Mountain Hike

here are a variety of hikes available to suit every level of expertise. Choose to descend on foot, in cable cars or extend your venture up to Maclears Beacon, the highest point on the mountain. Platteklip Gorge offers the quickest way up, whereas the India Venster hike follows a less strenuous route up the face of the mountain, underneath the cable cars. The Lions Head hike, alongside Table Mountain, offers a steep climb with the assistance of chains or a more relaxed one without. No matter the route taken, every hike promises breathtaking bird’s-eye views over the city and coast.

Once you are at the top of this playground for nature lovers and outdoor fanatics there are stunning scenic walks that allow you to gaze at spectacular views, and explore the terrain. These glorious walks are neither long nor strenuous, and can be merged so that everyone in your party gets to see as much, or as little, as they want. You may plan a certain walk and then get waylaid by the cute lazy dassies that sun themselves on craggy rocks. For breathtaking views the Dassie Walk exhibits sweeping panoramas to the north, south and west.

360° aerial views of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula are offered on the Agama Walk, and if you wish to hike to the brink of the plateau the Klipspringer Walk is a fabulous choice. Easy to navigate and on level ground these walks are effortless and incredibly rewarding with magnificent views.
There are lengthier options if you are feeling more intrepid and adventurous.

Join the bird keeper for an informative and fun face-to-face experience with these feathered friends. The rockhopper penguins at the Two Oceans Aquarium were found stranded on southern Cape beaches and were rehabilitated by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) before being donated. They cannot be released because of the risk of introducing diseases into wild populations. Bookings must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Shark Cage Diving

The day begins at the quaint coastal village of Gansbaai, at the Great White House, where a decadent breakfast awaits before heading off to an action packed day. As safety is paramount, divers will be inducted with a brief introductory talk given by a marine biologist, before being fitted with life-jackets.

This adventure is ideal for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts. Take in the excitement and heart pounding experience of being face-to-face with a spine chilling great white shark, protected only by the steel rungs of a submerged cage.

Magnificent and possibly terrifying shark viewing awaits you at Shark Alley. A deep blue channel of water this menacing pathway is situated between two islands, namely Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Home to over 60 000 Cape Fur seals Dyer Island provides bountiful hunting opportunities for this apex predator.

Gansbaai boasts the largest population of these warm-blooded great whites and there are sublime sightings all year round. Other wildlife species such as Cape Gannets, Cape Cormorants, African Penguins, whales and dolphins are also likely to be sighted in the vast liquid expanse.

If you choose not to descend into the depths of the ocean, you can view the sightings from the safety of the shark viewing deck on the boat. As white sharks are surface feeders you are assured to gasp at hulking swishes of tail, whirling waters, and the ever present Jaws theme tune humming in your head as you spot a Dorsal fin gliding out of the water. This is a chilling experience to get up close and personal with these sleek, daredevil creatures. You will never forget this!

A wonderful family outdoor experience is a boat trip to the Cape fur seal and bird sanctuary on Duiker Island, also known as Seal Island. Your kids will love the opportunity to get up close to these playful, curious animals. Any excursion that involves water, always turns out to be great fun for the family and this tour certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Hop aboard a charter and make your way from Hout Bay to the island. As you splash through the ocean, be captivated by views of spectacular Chapmans Peak Drive and lofty Sentinel Mountain. As you get closer to the island, watch the seals frolic, flop on rocks and sunbathe in their natural habitat. Learn about their behaviour from a knowledgeable guide, watch seabirds, view thick kelp forests and if you are lucky, you might see whales and dolphins in the deep. Great fun awaits the family here.

Penguins at Boulders Beach

Watch the antics of wild penguins in South Africa at Boulders Beach, one of the only places in the world where you can get up close and personal with these delightful water birds. A great place for the family to spend the day, Boulders Beach is fabulous for swimming, and the powdery white sand cove is perfectly sheltered from strong currents by massive boulders. Boulders remains the only place in the world where one can get up close to African penguins.

Kids can explore rock pools, climb on boulders, build sandcastles and the whole family can enjoy a picnic. A 40-minute drive from Cape Town, Boulders Beach forms part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area ensuring the protection of the penguins.
